5 mistakes to avoid when adopting AI in your business

Avoid the Hype

AI is a hot trending topic today. Everybody is using it, and every company wants to use it. Every day, a new product or version of an AI-powered product emerges on the market, promising to solve every problem. Be cautious; AI is still evolving, and even the most experienced products should be viewed cautiously.

AI adoption in a company must be business-process driven, not external-provider driven. What this means is that you must first know your business process very well and identify those that require a lot of manual labor, those that generate or require a lot of data to be analyzed, or those that generate very similar outputs every single time. Use AI to enhance those tasks or processes.

Do it yourself.

Another trending topic in business automation is the low-code or no-code development environment. They promise to convert any person into a software developer in hours. They can help to accelerate your product development; however, they are best suited for simple automations where quality attributes like security, performance, and scalability are not strictly enforced.

However, when dealing with critical processes or new technology, you must be very solid in software design principles. You don’t want to risk your data security or end up with a solution that stalls every time there is a peak in the number of users.

Yes, you do need expert help to do AI properly in your company.

AI is not a “pluggable” search engine.

Yes, LLMs (the smart and wise components that know it all) powerfully respond to our questions through intelligent bots. However, they can only respond according to the data they were trained with. Nowadays they can connect to the Internet to overcome that limitation; however, there is a crucial piece of data they need to answer questions about your business: your private corporate data.

So, you can’t just ask ChatGPT or Copilot to analyze last year’s sales. You need to connect your data to those clients (or any other AI agent that requires your data to answer your questions). And yes, once again, you need RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) experts to do that (the right way).

Don’t let the AI make decisions for you.

Especially the strategic ones.

LLMs work in a probabilistic way. They are very good at generating new content, but they don’t know your day-to-day business logistics. They don’t know (and they don’t care) about your business goals. And most importantly, they hallucinate. They may return incorrect or made-up answers.

So, you may use the LLM’s power to generate digested insights you can use to make decisions. But you should never let an AI agent along with an LLM decide if you should hire or fire a provider or release a product in a new market, for example.

Security matters.

LLM providers like OpenAI, Microsoft, or Google are required by the government to keep a record of every conversation that you and I have with their chatting tools (ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini) [1].

Having a conversation with ChatGPT or Copilot about organizing a personal trip is not the same as chatting with them about your sales, clients, or providers. We are talking about very sensitive data here. So, you must be secure that you are always in control of your data. Ensure that you are not exchanging private corporate data with undisclosed parties (by hosting your AI platform in your own infrastructure), or if you do, ensure that they have a “zero data retention” policy or similar measures in place to safeguard you.
